Abdominal hysterectomy

Abdominal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed through an incision in the lower abdomen. One or both ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed during the procedure. Before surgery, there are two main decisions that need to be made about the procedure: whether the cervix should be removed and whether the ovaries and tubes should be removed. If the ovaries are removed, a woman may need to decide if she should take estrogen replacement therapy.

Transobturator (TOT) and Transvaginal (TVT) tapes

Transobturator tape (TOT) and transvaginal tape (TVT) are vaginal procedures to correct stress urinary incontinence. Both these procedures are done by inserting a narrow strip of synthetic material in the vaginal skin below the urethra to support the bladder neck.

Repair of cystocele

Surgical repair of cystocele (bladder prolapse) is a vaginal procedure whereby the bladder is pushed back up and the tissues reinforced to support the bladder in its anatomical place. All sutures dissolve and do not need removal.

Repair of rectocele

Surgical repair of rectocele (rectal wall prolapse) is a vaginal procedure whereby the rectum is pushed back and the tissues reinforced to support the rectum in its anatomical place. All sutures dissolve and do not need removal.

Vaginal hysterectomy

Vaginal hysterectomy is when the uterus and cervix is removed through the vagina with no scar on the abdomen. It is the route of choice when there is some degree of uterine prolapse, but it can also be done without a prolapse. All sutures dissolve and do not need removal.

Abdominal myomectomy is the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus, leaving the uterus in place. This is usually achieved through an abdominal incision. It is a procedure of choice in young women with large fibroids causing pain and pressure effects in the abdomen.
